Settlement in Competition Law
and Compensation Claims

On 22 June 2015, the Belgian Competition Authority announced on its website that the Auditorat (public prosecutor for the settlement of industrial disputes) had pronounced its first settlement decision whereby it imposed fines on 18 major companies in the supermarket sector and suppliers of perfume and hygiene products, totalling 174,000,000 Euros.

Will the national Privacy Commission be
allowed to impose fines up to € 810,000
for privacy infringements?

On 8 June 2015 the State Secretary responsible for privacy Bart Tommelein (Open VLD) stated in a press release that he intends to submit a draft act in the autumn to the Belgian House of representatives. This draft act intends to provide the national Privacy Commission with more powers to act against companies that violate the privacy rights of their customers.
